Temporary edge protection systems

Temporary edge protection systems are used in construction and maintenance work, primarily to prevent people from falling. Our edge protection systems have been designed and tested to the British & European Standard BS EN 13374:2013+A1:2018. The design and checking of the systems are compliant with BS5975 (Code of Practice for Temporary Works Procedures). 

Bespoke systems and demarcation for non-standard structures can also be designed to suit your structure by our experienced external Temporary Works Designer.

Class A Temporary Edge Protection :

Provide protection to flat surfaces and slopes up to 10o. It provides resistance to static loads and is based on the requirement to support a person leaning against, holding onto, walking beside and possibly stumbling against the Edge Protection.

Class B Temporary Edge Protection :

Provides protection to sloping surfaces generally from 10o to 30o and to 60o for 2m slopes. Class B provides resistance to both static and low dynamic loads and is based on the requirements to support a person leaning against, walking beside and/or holding onto, and possibly stumbling against. It also contains a person who could slide down a steep sloping surface and subsequently impacts the edge protection.

Class C Temporary Edge Protection :

Provides protection to steeply sloping surfaces from 30o up to 45o and up to 60o for 5m slopes. It provides resistance to high dynamic loads only and is based on the requirements to contain a person sliding down a steeply sloping surface. Class C Edge Protection, in essence is a fall arrest system and does not provide a handhold or support for a person to lean against.

  • Demarcation systems can be designed and provided; these must though be a minimum of 2m from the roof / floor edge

Passive vs Active Fall Protection – what is the difference?

Passive fall protection and active fall protection are both systems designed to safeguard workers from falls, but they differ in how they operate and their level of user involvement.

Passive Fall Protection Definition: Passive fall protection refers to systems that do not require the user to take action or interact with the equipment to ensure safety. These systems are permanently in place and provide protection without the need for active participation. eg safety nets, fixed barriers, guard rails.

Active Fall Protection Definition: Active fall protection systems require the user to actively engage with the equipment to ensure their safety. This involves wearing and correctly using personal protective equipment (PPE) and following specific procedures. eg Rope access systems, personal fall arrest systems (harnesses, lanyards, and anchors).

Passive fall protection is considered safer and so preferable to active protection which requires individual action in order to protect him/herself, e.g. clipping on lanyards.

What is FASET?

FASET works together with its members to provide guidance and training to promote safer ways of working. What does a safety net do?

The purpose of a safety net is to arrest falls by absorbing the kinetic energy from the person falling. Safety nets minimise the distance and consequence of the fall. Often, they act in conjunction with other temporary safety systems such as edge protection and stair tower access to create a complete safe system of works for people working at height.
